遗失与变形:思想史视角下勒温“渠道理论”的谱系书写
Lost and Deformed: The Genealogical Writing of Lewin’s “Channel Theory” in the Perspective of History of Ideas
In the 1940s, Kurt Lewin underwent an academic transformation in the later stage of his career. Moving away from Gestalt psychology, he shifted his focus toward applied psychology research addressing social governance issues and developed his field theory into the more communication-oriented “channel theory”. Based on group dynamics and topological psychology, Lewin drew on his “food habits study” conducted during World War II to observe mechanisms of information dissemination and resource flow within groups. From this, he derived key concepts such as “gatekeeper”, “gate region” and “channel”, which profoundly influenced later sociological studies of news production and communication research. However, when scholars like White introduced Lewin’s ideas, the holistic framework of “channel theory” was largely overlooked. Only the concept of the “gatekeeper” was extracted and emphasized, while the complex considerations in Lewin’s original theory—such as social conflict, group psychology, and material factors—were diluted. Moreover, early gatekeeping studies were heavily influenced by the information theory paradigm, whose explanatory power somewhat suppressed the group structural perspective emphasized by channel theory. With Lewin’s premature death, the theory was never systematically refined or widely inherited, eventually becoming a “gray area” in the history of communication scholarship.

The news flow process should be divided by functions into news gathering and news processing segments. Research attention should be focused on the news gatherer, for it is he who makes the significant decisions.

At the time of his death in 1947, Kurt Lewin was seen as one of the foremost psychologists of his day. He is now best known for his three-step model of change. However, this has been criticized for its “simplicity,” and it has even been suggested that Lewin “never developed such a model,” yet this ignores its links to the rest of Lewin’s work. Surprisingly, there appears to have been no rigorous attempt to understand the connection between Lewin’s early work on field theory and his later work on social and organizational change. In addressing this gap in the Lewin literature, this article will not only show that the three-step model of change is far from being simplistic but also that it was a well-thought-out approach to change based on his development of field theory. The main difference between the two is one of nomenclature rather than substance.

A study of 16 daily newspaper telegraph editors in Wisconsin reveals that the average desk-man is “caught in a strait jacket of mechanical details,” with the press association playing the major role as a selector of news. The author is assistant professor of journalism at the University of California.

In the first of these articles, those aspects of group life which can be represented as an equilibrium in a phase space were considered. In the discussion of social equilibrium it was emphasized that for understanding social events, and for planning social action, a reference from the phase space to the total social field is usually necessary. As an example of such an analysis of a social field, certain problems of social channels will be discussed briefly in this second article. We shall then consider some general problems of social planning, with particular reference to the role of “action research ” in bringing about social change.

Studies of foreign correspondents, telegraph editors, readers and content have thrown light on several stages in the global news flow. The author suggests further research focusing upon the roles of the relatively unpublicized “gatekeepers” who operate on an international scale.

In one of the first studies of its kind, all the wire stories used and all those rejected by a non-metropolitan newspaper over a seven-day period are classified by content, and the reasons given by the telegraph editor for his choices are analyzed. Dr. White is research professor of journalism at Boston University.
