This paper is dedicated to an in-depth analysis of the contradiction in Milton’s press freedom, and to a multi-dimensional explanation of its roots, trying to re-examine Milton’s press freedom in a broader literary, political and historical perspective. Milton’s press freedom thought is not only a passionate call for press freedom and speech freedom, but also an understanding and recognition of censorship. Milton’s Truth not only has the characteristics of religious theology, but also presents a kind of rational power. Press freedom is a particularity as a rupture in thought in Milton’s entire ideological system. These contradictions are related to Milton’s own religious thoughts, political opinions, and nationalist sentiments. At the same time, they are unified with the complex characteristics of the era, the turbulent political environment and the diversified religious and cultural thoughts, reflecting the great speculative tension and vivid vitality contained in Milton’s press freedom.
