From the very beginning of modern journalism history, “authenticity” has been the core value of journalism. To establish a cultural authority of truth, a set of eyewitness-centered strategies have been developed in news practice. Nevertheless, the authenticity of eyewitness was always accompanied by skepticism in journalism history which led to a deep doubt on the ability of traditional ways of news production to obtain and present truth. In social media era, the booming of “citizen eyewitness” provides an important opportunity to reconstruct journalism authenticity strategies in the context of globally news production transition. Newsrooms could forge cooperative relationships with their citizen counterparts to seek truth instead of playing the role of adjudicator of truth-claims alone. Based on this, this paper attempts to trace the history of eyewitness as a practical strategy at different times, aiming to supplement the prospective of news production in the long arguments about epistemology of authenticity, then rethink the impact of involved multiple communication actors on the concept of truth of news.
