Proceeding from my personal experience, I review how the study of the history of Chinese communication thought started and evolved for the past forty years. I call into focus how scholars from China Mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan have jointly explored the lineage of Chinese communication thought. I argue that we must go beyond the logical framework of Western communication studies and center on Chinese people's communication practice and on their ideas and mental structures springing from that cultural-specifc communication practice.
