On Communication Theories in Peircean Semiotics
The communication of signs’ meanings is one of the essential parts in peircean semiotics. According to Peirce, the analysis of communication are based on the following hypothesis: the sign users communicate and share their meanings, for constructing the community of meaning by virtue of signs. Following this logic, Peirce innovatively puts forward the triadic pattern of communication, and then develops a series of communication theories around this pattern, namely, the semiotic self, the bidirectionalprocess of communication as well as the community of inquiry. Influenced by his theories of communication, peircean semiotics, demonstrating as an open and dynamic theoretical systems, continually guides the contemporary semiotic studies beyond structuralism. And his exploration of communication problems, not only lays the foundation of the early American communication theories, but also has been inspiring the contemporary communication researchers to ponder on the essence of the communication phenomena.
