1950年代至1970年代初期MIT国际研究中心的中国传播研究随着该中心的“国际传播”研究计划而兴，是冷战前期美国政府反共心理战的直接产物。它们关心既是“极权社会”又是“发展中国家”的共产主义中国里发生的“传播”现象。在它们眼里，“传播”既是“极权社会”中国“从上至下的政治劝服”，又是“发展中国家”中国的“发展手段”或“国家整合手段”。我们在否思这些研究背后的“极权社会vs.自由社会”、“传统vs.现代”等西式二元思维框架的同时，也应反躬自省，追寻当前中国传播研究的超越西方霸权之道。

The studies on communicationsin Communist China in MIT Center for International Studies which is a product of the international communication project of this center in the early 1950’s, which is related to the psychological warfare against the communists.In those researches, “Communications”isnot only the political persuasions inthe“totalitarian China”, but also the means ofnational development or integration in the“developing China”. We shouldnotonly unthink the Western dualist paradigms such as “Totalitarian Society vs. Freedom World”, “TraditionalChina vs. ModernChina”in those researches, but also transcend the Western hegemony in the problem consciousness inthe studies oncommunications of China.
