This is a historical retrospect of critical communication studies. In this interview, American critical communication scholar Dan Schiller recalled his academic exchanges and personal interactions with Herbert Schiller, George Gerbner, Dallas Smythe, Vincent Mosco and other scholars. Their experiences revealed the historical links between the rise of critical communication and the global economic change and New World Information and Communication Order movement. Taking the Cold War and communication study as a main stream, the interview also includes the following issues: the establishment of communication discipline and the Cold War,psychological warfare and communication research in the US, critical communication scholars’ life experiences, communication scholars and knowledge movement, new changes in journalism, advice to young communication scholars and so on.
