重探19世纪中后期广东报业的史实与观念——基于海外新见刊物的考察
Revisiting the Facts and Ideas of the History of Journalism in Guangdong in the Middle and Late 19th Century: Based on Newly Discovered Newspapers Overseas
依托新发现的奥地利藏《中外新闻七日录》和英国藏《广州新报》原件，本文重新考察了19世纪中后期广东报业发展的基础史实和新闻观念。文章论述了几个关键问题：其一，《中外新闻七日录》停刊于1871年，当前提及的1868年、1870年等均不准确；其二，《广州新报》承接《中外新闻七日录》而来，两者有继替关系；其三，《广州新报》是综合性新闻刊物，是西方对中国展开医学传教活动的产物；其四，作为广东地区第一份以“新报”命名的刊物，《广州新报》在空间层面广泛呼应各地商业报刊的新闻观念，在时间层面承接教会报刊的实践理念，提供了一个较为独特的“新报”样本，代表着近代广东中文报业的过渡状态。
Based on the newly discovered The Chinese and Foreign Weekly News in Austria and The Canton News in Britain, the paper re-examines the historical facts and ideas in the history of Guangdong journalism in the middle and late 19th century. Firstly, The Chinese and Foreign Weekly News was discontinued in 1871, and the current references to 1868 and 1870 are not accurate. Secondly, The Canton News came from The Chinese and Foreign Weekly News, and the two have a direct succession relationship. Thirdly, The Canton News is a comprehensive news publications and a product of Western medical missionary activities. Fourthly, as the first publication in Guangdong named after the Sin-Pao, The Canton News echoes the journalism ideas of commercial newspapers, and inherits the practical concepts of church newspapers, providing a unique “Sin-Pao” sample that represents the transitional state of Chinese newspaper in Guangdong Province.

2. 《上当事书》是王韬的作品。据《广州新报》所载内容，嘉约翰应该是从《七日录》时期开始就连载该文，且转自《香港中外新报》。该文在《广州新报》第1-2号连载两次。
