作为时尚文化基础设施的小红书与时尚观念的重塑——基于三类时尚博主的田野研究
Xiaohongshu Emerging as a Fashion Cultural Infrastructure and Reshaping Fashion Ideals: A Qualitative Research of Three Types of Fashion Bloggers
Changes in labor specialization can stem from developments in industrial structure, changes in factors of production, employment structure, employment relationships, and transaction costs. The development of digital platforms has also led to the differentiation of labor types, which has become a topic of increasing attention. This paper conducts an empirical study on several Xiaohongshu (former) staff members, two MCN agency staff members, and 38 fashion bloggers to show that the expansion of Xiaohongshu has directly led to the professional differentiation of fashion Labor. This paper posits that Xiaohongshu’s data-driven operations, business model, and feminine focus have directly led to the categorization of fashion bloggers into three main groups. The first two categories encompass “established bloggers,” who have been promoting fashion brands either full-time or part-time before the advent of Xiaohongshu. Their attitudes towards Xiaohongshu can be further subdivided into “flexible established bloggers,” who are open to Xiaohongshu, and “resolute established bloggers,” who resist it. The third category is the “new bloggers” group, comprising “digital natives.” Their understanding of fashion is primarily shaped by their digital practices. Moreover, due to the opaque nature of algorithms, the significant involvement of MCN agencies, and the invisibility of the platform behind the platform, the operational mechanisms of the platform remain unclear to most MCN agency employees and individual bloggers.

This article examines the divergent shopping patterns for consumers located in different positions within urban China’s social hierarchy. Drawing upon detailed ethnographic data, the article argues that differentiated class positions in urban China are expressed through the practicalities of daily shopping and consumer practices that involve fundamentally different ‘problems’ of uncertainty and value in the marketplace. It is shown that questions of social inequality are central to understanding not only marketplace behaviors, but also in drawing connections between markets and cultural logics of daily life.

This article examines new conceptions of gender and sexuality in China, asking how and why they have become so integral to the organization of service work regimes there. Drawing on ethnographic data collected in three urban Chinese retail settings, this article demonstrates how essentialized conceptions of gender and sexuality powerfully communicate class distinctions in service settings through associations with the imagery of China’s shift from socialism to a marketized society. A shift from the socialist “iron rice bowl” to the “rice bowl of youth” infuses youthful, feminine, urban bodies with value while simultaneously devaluing middle-aged and rural women. This article argues that an essentializing discourse of gender legitimates new inequalities in urban China by masking the class distinctions simultaneously produced.

The digitalization of fandom and fan culture has become significant topic in recent studies, yet there is a lack of examination of the nuance between specific fan performance and the affordance, infrastructure and architecture that constitute it as it is today. In this article, I examine how digital fandom involves the platform algorithm and the logic of data contribution, affectively engaging fans to participate in increased data labour. Depicting online fandom on Weibo, a massive Chinese social media platform, I portray the data-ization of online fandom in China, arguing that the traffic data has been dematerialized as new affective object in fan–object relations, while digital fan culture has been constructed into a type of algorithmic culture.
