Downloading Identity: An Empirical Study of Yugu’s National Identity in the New Media Environment

摘要

作为身份认同的重要内容,国家认同是社会凝聚力的关键体现,并且在不同的历史语境和现实条件下持续变迁。近年来,新媒体以其信息多向互动、影音图文高度融合等特性,确立了与传统媒体不同的认同构建模式。媒介技术手段对国家认同的影响越来越呈现出典型的数字时代结构形态,在中国社会转型的历史时期显现出复杂态势。本文基于建构主义理论,运用探索性因子、验证性因子、多元回归、结构方程模型等方法,分析了甘肃省肃南县裕固族人的国家认同整体水平,特别探讨了新媒体使用与其国家认同之间的关系。结果表明,裕固族人的新媒体使用对其国家认同水平有显著影响,这种影响以“下载身份”的方式集中体现。

Abstract

As an important part of identity, national identity is a crucial manifestation of social cohesion of a country, and it continues to change under the different historical contexts and realistic conditions. In recent years, new media has established a new identity construction model with its multi-directional information interaction and high integration of text, audio and video. The influence of media technology on national identity is more and more typical in the digital age, and it shows complex situation in the historical period of China’s social transformation. Based on social construction theory, this paper estimates the overall level of Yugu’s national identity in Su Nan Yugu Autonomous County in Gansu Province, and it especially explores the relationship between the new media use and Yugu’s national identity by using EFA, CFA, multiple regression, and structural equation model. The results suggest that Yugu’s use of new media has a significant impact on their national identity, which is mainly reflected in the form of “downloading identity”.

/ This study investigates latent and manifest dimensions of nationalism and their theoretical and empirical relationships with patterns of media use in the everyday life context of metropolitan China. Data from a face-to-face survey conducted with a random sample of 600 Shanghai residents show that the mass media's appeal to the public perception of nationalism acts effectively and differentially on both event-triggered and banal everyday forms of nationalism. It is also found that attention to news has a direct effect on manifest nationalism, but a largely indirect effect on latent nationalism through specific knowledge, mental complexity, patterns of information processing and interpersonal communication.

This article develops a new theory of polymedia in order to understand the consequences of digital media in the context of interpersonal communication. Drawing on illustrative examples from a comparative ethnography of Filipino and Caribbean transnational families, the article develops the contours of a theory of polymedia. We demonstrate how users avail themselves of new media as a communicative environment of affordances rather than as a catalogue of ever proliferating but discrete technologies. As a consequence, with polymedia the primary concern shifts from the constraints imposed by each individual medium to an emphasis upon the social, emotional and moral consequences of choosing between those different media. As the choice of medium acquires communicative intent, navigating the environment of polymedia becomes inextricably linked to the ways in which interpersonal relationships are experienced and managed. Polymedia is ultimately about a new relationship between the social and the technological, rather than merely a shift in the technology itself.
