Communicator’s Bodies: Communication and Presence —Evolution from Consciousness Subject, Body-subject to Intelligent Subject
Starting from existential phenomenology, phenomenology of technology and theory of post-humanism, the essay traces and investigates the basic condition of the topic of “body” in communication studies as well as its value and meaning in the innovation of communication studies with the analysis of new media practices like mobile networks, vitural reality and antifcial intelligence. Focusing on the bodies of communicators, the author displays and elaborates the complex relationship between communication and multiple forms of bodies and multiple forms of presence by describing the evolution of communicating body from consciousness subject, body-subject to intelligent subject. It is pointed out that the so-called presence or absence is actually the fact that the subject is in or out of the combined relation networks made up of reality and virtuality. Communication should be seem as body practices weaving the relation networks and multiple networks of physical world, information and signifcance converge on the intelligent bodies as subjects of nodes. Communication studies must turn back to the world of bodies and reposit itself into the contemporary world of intelligent subjects to reestablish the fundamental relationship between communication and the human presence.
