Cyber-motherhood and the “Raising Doll” Practice of Girl Players
In today’s culture of the internet, young women who have not yet married or had children are interested in “raising” virtual babies. The intersection of girl culture and motherhood studies has prompted a rethinking of how the connotation and extension of “motherhood” expand and change in the digital era. This study focuses on the practice of “cyber-motherhood” in recent years among online communities of plush doll players, with empirical data gathered through in-depth interviews and participatory observation methods. In contrast to previous studies that focused on how technology affects biological child rearing, “cyber-motherhood” focuses on the intertwined interaction of humans and technology through the concept of the cyborg. According to research, media technology, social structure, and the agency of girl players interact to shape the “cyber-mothering” practice, which is based on embodiment practice and visual techniques. It echoes the social institution of motherhood while also undermining its sanctity. While “cyber-motherhood” provides girls with a flexible strategy of dealing with life’s pressures, flowing eros emerges from the cracks of rigid binary logic, acting as a transient but widely spread force while also opening up new opportunities for various gender subject-positions.

While the benefits of play have been widely recognized, carrying out activities with toys at adult age is still often seen as stigmatizing behaviour. Some adults solve this issue by referring to their toy activities as either hobbies or collecting. Yet, the primary purpose of toys is play. People may therefore utilize their toys for new kinds of play. One popular decision is the utilization of toys in photographs and videos aiming at personalization and storytelling on social media. Using eight interviews, we point out that this visual contextualization of play ties into not only the adults’ sublimation of their desires to use their toys but also to threads of cultural history in which sublimated or substituted artistic uses have been found for objects. Finally, we show that this activity too is a form of play, made possible by the existence of photo-sharing sites like Flickr and Instagram.

Star worship is an ever-growing phenomenon around the globe. Across various social media platforms in China, a new idol–fan relationship model has emerged, such that the fans have stepped up from merely worshipping the idols to being able to co-cultivate their idols, including their public images, the scope of their work, and even their personal lives. Based on a grounded theory approach, this study utilized text analysis and in-depth interviews to explore parakin relationships between fans and idols and proposed a dual motivation model to explain the motivations of fans for forming such a relationship. The findings extend current fandom literature by exploring a new front of fan–idol interactions in the context of social media. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

1. “娃圈”内的娃娃并不局限于棉花娃娃。在2017年之前,“娃圈”中的娃娃多指BJD(ball joint-ball doll)娃娃,即“球形关节人偶”,这类娃娃面容精致,四肢关节可灵活转动,较棉花娃娃而言更加接近“人形”,售价也更为高昂。
