International Nickname as Rhetorical Strategy of Cyber Nationalism: an Ethical Analysis of Patriotic Mobilization

Abstract

In the foreign-related communication and disputes on social media platforms of China, international nickname is a kind of relatively popular form of non-mainstream folk discourse. By attaching nickname to other countries, some Internet participants even launch the patriotic mobilization of online nationalism. International nicknames are partly new words generated in social media, and partly old words whose semantics have changed in social media. Some epithet will produce a populism and language ethics crisis, through metaphor or metonymy rhetoric of irony, which will lead to passive situation, weaken international discourse power, and influence the aesthetic language of Chinese language in international communication. As a consequence, some international nicknames will destroy the national image of China, eliminate the temperament of openness, confidence, humility.

Nicknames distribute power within a social group: they can be imposed, or they can be used by agreement between namer and named. This is not the difference between political and apolitical uses of nicknames: agreement is a political act, the result of social negotiation, in which the nickname is a token. Agreement is a matter of pragmatics and politeness, so a theory of nicknames and nicknaming depends on the pragmatics of nicknames and the politeness structures implicated in them, rather than conventional logico-semantic accounts of names. Negotiation of social power within the constraints of speech acts and maxims of politeness leads to iterations of “naming contracts” between named and namer, such that nicknames are politically focusing social objects.

To develop a form of analysis for nicknames and nicknaming, we propose a theoretical construct, using our empirical knowledge of nicknames, and posit a uniquely sociological perspective that describes and explains nicknames as aspects of the process of social action. Our approach is couched in terms of a theory of naming potentially useful to all scholars of names, whether they study human nicknames, the names of post offices in Kentucky, pet names of body parts, or the religious toponymsof Guatemala.

1. “雅”“蔑”主要从生产该词的语境出发,结合词义流变过程中的情感倾向而确定,这种情感具有相对稳固性,并在一定程度上催化了本国网民情感,进行塑造民间对外情绪。

2. “摹状”强调语义理据,即名称的词义对指称对象的特征(内涵)的描述,“因果”强调历史传承,即一个词由历史约定俗成,有唯一的指代对象,其词义描述的内涵并不重要。

3. 克里普克将名称区分为严格指示词(rigid designator)和柔性指示词(flaccid designator),前者忽略名称的“意义”,因为它可以直接准确指称一个对象,不在乎对象的性质,后者强调指称方式受到的偶然事件影响而发生改变。
