Deep Cognition Promotes Curatorial News of Covid-19 Vaccine: News Elaboration Mediation Model in News Curation of Social Media

Abstract

Traditional Cognitive Mediation Model and Communication Mediation Model explore mediating effect of cognitive processing of information in relationship between media contact and ordinary social behavior. This study develops Cognitive Mediation Model and Communication Mediation Model, putting them under background of mass self-communication on social media, and empirically tests mediating effect of cognitive processing of social media news on relationship between social media news contact background, motivation and using social media to participate in mass self-communication. Self-communication of social media users is included in discussion about Cognitive Mediation Model and Communication Mediation Model. Research finds that news elaboration on social media has a significant positive impact on curatorial news of social media, use expectation of social media and information efficiency have significant positive impacts on news elaboration on social media, and news elaboration on social media plays a mediating role in relationship between use expectation of social media or information efficiency and curatorial news of social media. Empirical test of variables is carried out in combination with specific topic of covid-19 vaccine. Therefore, findings also help us to understand news communication of covid-19 vaccine in social media.

The cognitive mediation model predicts that the impact of a learning gratification for news media use on knowledge of news content is mediated by information processing variables. Specifically, surveillance gratifications seeking should encourage two forms of information processing: news attention and elaboration. These forms of information processing should covary and have a direct and positive impact on learning of news content. The impact of surveillance gratifications seeking on knowledge—expected at the zero-order level—should be approximately zero when these information processing variables are controlled. A secondary analysis of two sample surveys (N = 512 and N = 567) plus analysis of original data specifically designed to test the model (N = 299) provide nearly complete support for hypotheses derived from the model in the context of political learning from the news. Suggestions for expansion of the model are provided.

This study investigated how infographics may affect individuals’ news processing, focusing on multimodality and interactivity as its signature characteristics. News readers’ prior knowledge and issue involvement, which affect their ability and motivation to process information, were considered as potential moderators. In a 3 (text vs graphic vs text + graphic) × 2 (hyperlinks vs no hyperlinks) between-subjects experiment ( N = 360), participants read a news article concerning economic issues. Adding graphics to the news heightened the extent to which they engaged in news elaboration, albeit only among those with higher issue involvement. However, in-text hyperlinks hindered information recall among those with less prior knowledge, creating an information acquisition gap between more and less resourceful individuals. The graphical representation of news appeared to have heuristic appeals to those less involved in and less knowledgeable about the news topic, leading to more favorable news evaluation.

This research explores the influence of mass media use and community context on civic engagement. The article presents a multilevel test of print, broadcast, and Internet effects on interpersonal trust and civic participation that acknowledges there are (a) micro-level differences in the motives underlying media use, (b) age-cohort differences in patterns of media use and levels of civic engagement, and (c) macro-level differences in community / communication context. Accordingly, the effects of individual differences in media use and aggregate differences in community context are analyzed within generational subsamples using a pooled data set developed from the 1998 and 1999 DDB Life Style Studies. The data suggest that informational uses of mass media are positively related to the production of social capital, whereas social-recreational uses are negatively related to these civic indicators. Informational uses of mass media were also found to interact with community context to influence civic engagement. Analyses within subsamples find that among the youngest adult Americans, use of the Internet for information exchange more strongly influences trust in people and civic participation than do uses of traditional print and broadcast news media.

Political information efficacy theory was examined in this pretest-posttest experiment of Web interactivity. Experimental (high) and control (low) interactive conditions produced significantly different effects for the participants ( N = 271). Exposure to highly interactive Web features resulted in significant increases in political information efficacy. 3. 在传播中介模型(O-S-O-R)中,R用response(反应)指代;本研究中的第二个R的具体内涵指传播行为(策展新闻),笔者用reaction这一表征行为反应的词来指代。

4. 对elaboration的翻译,国内存在多种译法,如精化、思考,放在新闻传播学的知识体系里,笔者认为翻译成“精细处理”更有利于与新闻传播学既有知识的连接,也易于阅读者理解。

5. 2021年1月19-28日,对普通居民的新冠疫苗的规模性接种尚未开始。基于这一时间段获得的截面调查数据能够真实地反应普通居民在新冠疫苗议题上的媒介使用及其他社会状况。

6. 关于填答时长的试调查时,找了6位被调查者填答了问卷,填答时间最小为7分钟,最大为12分钟;考虑到在该试调查过程中,调查者要求被调查者寻找调查问卷存在的不足,同时就问卷存在的不足提出意见,被调查者会投入更多精力思考调查问题,这会让被调查者花更多时间填答问卷。然而,在正式调查中,被调查者无需寻找调查问卷的不足,回答时间会缩短,因此将问卷回答时间过短的标准界定为低于5分钟。

7. 测谎题为“我对国家社会有足够的了解”,在调查问卷中出现了两次,中间隔了数道调查问题,这一调查提问有五个答案供被调查者选择,“完全不符合”“比较不符合”“一般”、“比较符合”“完全符合”,分别赋值“1”“2”“3”“4”“5”;在对这一提问的两次回答中,有412位被调查者答案完全相同,有133位被调查者的答案数值相差为1;答案数值相差为1意味着没有出现性质相反的回答,考虑到这一提问两次出现之间间隔数道调查问题,部分填答者出现小幅度变动属于正常现象。

8. 调查问卷的最后一道题为,“用 0到10 来衡量您回答的真实程度,10 表示‘完全真实’,0表示‘完全不真实’。您的评分是___分”。由于0-10是11级量表,中间值为5,真实性大于等于7的调查问卷是可以用的。在本研究的545份问卷中,真实性为“7”的是86人,为“8”的是182人,为“9”的是163人,为“10”的是114人。
