A Reconsideration on the Boundary of Media Sociology: In Response to Li Hongtao and Huang Shunming
With the development of the mediatizaiton in current society, the legitimacy of media sociology began to emerge. In response to Li Hongtao and Huang Shunming's research on the boundary work of Media sociology of Britain and America, this paper holds that the first step in exploring the boundary problem of media sociology is to clarify the meaning of “media” and “society”. However, Li Hongtao and Huang Shunming did not reach a unified understanding on “media” and “society”, which directly led to the failure of their boundary work. The “Media turn” of Birmingham cultural studies promoted the development of media theory. Media has gradually been liberated from the shackles of traditional information dissemination and acquired the subjective status of equal dialogue with the society, thus contribute to the rising of media sociology. Current media practice has further promoted the discussion of mediatization. Media not only regulate society, but also construct the existence of the society. Only in this way can the valuable media sociology theory come into being.

When various media in their entirety mark how we articulate our social worlds, we need an approach of mediatization research that reflects this transmediality. To develop such an approach, the article first discusses the ‘institutionalist’ and ‘social-constructivist’ traditions of mediatization research. Both traditions concur in their understanding of mediatization as being a concept to capture the interrelation between the change of media and communication on the one hand, and the change of culture and society on the other hand. Taking this as a foundation it becomes possible to reflect on the role of certain media as ‘moulding forces’, i.e. as certain institutionalizations and reifications of communication. Such a conceptual reflection offers the chance to view the mediatization process as the change of transmedial communicative figurations by which we construct our mediatized worlds. Based on this theoretical foundation, the article subsequently reflects a twofold operationalization, i.e. as diachronous and synchronous mediatization research.

The present article explains why it is important to consider newspapers’ formats and content sections in discourse analyses. It performs a comparative analysis of the choice and naming of content sections in the print and online editions of three major Norwegian newspapers published in 2010. The concept of paratexts is stressed and used as an analytical tool through a four-dimensional framework. The analysis shows that sections that appear across paper brands and platforms refer quite conventionally to specific topics and genres, whereas sections that appear solely online rather tend to highlight social functions, social roles and social actors. Through their paratexts, the online-specific sections answer questions of who and why instead of what. In this sense, there seems to be a discursive development in the principles underlying text classification and navigation, turning towards a more dialogical and person-oriented discourse online.
