Abstract

What is news? Undoubtedly, this should be started with how to understand its genus. Robert Ezra Park from the Chicago School of Sociology is a pioneer to view news as a form of knowledge and treats it as “knowledge of acquaintance”. In the Progressive Era, Park’s view of news is based on the interactive practice of public everyday life and hoped for the reconstruction of the Great Society on the ground of this “knowledge of acquaintance”. However, Park’s understanding of news as “knowledge of acquaintance” is not detailed enough and he neglected the differences among different media platforms. News also has many kinds of knowledge forms, even common sense. In the era of digital media, platforms enable local knowledge, community knowledge news merely objectively presented and revealing itself by its own handiness to rush into the sight of users at the same time. It creates an unprecedented knowledge community of multielement and reconstructs users’ understanding of knowledge and their recognition of the community. As users identify their interest communities more and more, they are getting further away from the Great Society.
