The Purchase of “Intimacy”? : Research on the Para Social Relationship of Internet Anchor in the Joint Situation
From the perspective of Horton, this study discusses the communication situation between female anchor and audience through the screen and the construction process of para social relationship. The study found the webcast room is a dual joint situation. The first is the juncture between the commodity situation as the base and the daily encountered situation as the stage. Dual engagement is in the stage, female anchors, develop role-playing strategies and emotional strategies to connect multiple communication situations. It is found that the para social relationship is an intimate relationship manipulated by the anchor and imagined by the audience in a double joint situation. The mediation of the screen not only affects the cohesion of the situation, but also indicates the uncertainty of conflict and fracture of the situation. Finally, the article discusses the potential of social situation theory in the social media era.

This study supports the refinement of the concept of parasocial interaction (PSI) to apply to mediated personae that viewers might dislike. By contrast, traditional approaches have treated PSI as a sort of friendship with the mediated persona. Participants (N = 249) were randomly assigned to self-select a liked or disliked television persona. Various viewer reactions to that character were measured using two different measures of PSI. The data revealed that participants did experience PSI with disliked characters as well as liked characters, and that the two measures of PSI did not appear to assess the same construct. Implications for future research are discussed.
