The article reports the findings of an analysis into student postings on a mobile instant messaging service (WhatsApp) established to develop social presence in a small group of first-year undergraduate radiography students. The analysis was carried out using a validated and reported tool specifically designed to identify categories of social presence, developed using the Community of Enquiry theoretical model. The students themselves undertook the analysis, which enhanced validity due to participant verification of findings. Six hundred posts (approximately 10% of the total year's messages) were analysed at key points in the first-year student journey. In conclusion, WhatsApp was able to provide students with a platform to demonstrate all the characteristics relevant for the development of social presence. In addition, its immediacy appeared to offer benefits over embedded social media platforms such as discussion boards.Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

An experimental study of interaction in a collaborative desktop virtual environment is described. The aim of the experiment was to investigate if added haptic force feedback in such an environment affects \nperceived virtual presence, perceived social presence, perceived task performance, and task performance. A between-group design was employed, where seven pairs of subjects used an interface with graphic representation of the environment, audio connection, and haptic force feedback. Seven other pairs of subjects used an interface without haptic force feedback, but with identical features otherwise. The PHANToM, a one-point haptic device, was used for the haptic force feedback, and a program especially developed for the purpose provided the virtual environment. The program enables for two individuals placed in different locations to simultaneously feel and manipulate dynamic objects in a shared desktop virtual environment. Results show that haptic force feedback significantly improves task performance, perceived task performance, and pereceived virtual presence in the collaborative distributed environment. The results suggest that haptic force feedback increases perceived social presence, but the difference is not significant.

Several studies have shown that superstitious beliefs, such as beliefs in “lucky” product attributes, influence consumer purchase behaviour. Still, little is known about how social influence, in particular mere social presence, impacts consumer superstition-related purchase decisions. Drawing on impression management theory, this paper aims to investigate the effect of social presence on consumer purchase decisions of products featuring lucky charms including the role of anticipated embarrassment as a mediator of the social presence effect.
