Discourse and Ecology: An Analysis of the Stylistic Features of News Reviews in Republic of China

Abstract

Using the discourse analysis as a tool, this paper analyzes the stylistic features of 1247 news reviews in the newspaper of the Republic of China. There are two categories in general: narration interspersed with comments and non-narration interspersed with comments, and fve types in detail: report-biased, commentary-biased, reportorial & commenting, reportorial, and commenting. Then, taking the stylistic ecology as the path, supplemented by time, situation, human being and other factors, the paper analyzes three questions: why were report-biased and commentary-biased types few, why did commenting type fade away, and why did reportorial & commenting type become mainstream. This study fnds that stylistic features of news reviews change with time and situation, and human being. Based on the core feature of news review, narration interspersed with comments, the writing method of news review would ?uctuate with the time among types of report-biased, commentary-biased, and reportorial & commenting.
