Abstract

The paper examines the streaming video that are realized by the smartphone touchscreen as a problematic of computer media, which participate to generate the “post-” status that characterizes the perceptual crisis and transformation. It orients to provide a mediaarchaeological and gesture-phenomenological understanding on the new viewing experience that is symptomized by the “video brushing” gesture. To illustrate the medium specificity of the touch-controlled image apparatus, the paper explores connections of the digital touchscreen dispositif with the “pre-cinema” optical dispositif and that with the classicalcinema dispositif; it also interprets the specific modalities of the “video brushing” gesture, and reviews the underlying histories of touch-controlled technologies. It argues that the visual production of the touchscreen streaming videos depends on the interplay of the hardware- and software-affordance of and the hand intelligence; touchscreen images are characterized by the operativeness basing on the corporeal continuity, and they manifest the clash between the endless information-surface and the limited screen-frame.
