This study examines the theoretical origins and conceptual dimensions of digital back-feeding and explores its overview and influential factors in the perspective of family communication. Based on survey data from 3291 samples of three generations of 954 families from 54 cities of China, we conduct analyses and comparisons between different generations along the three dimensions of digital back-feeding (i.e., access, skill, and literacy). As the data demonstrate, the “back-feeding given” by the young generation and the “back-feeding received” by the old generation are largely consistent, and the rate of inconsistence is about 30%. Among the old generation, the grand parents are signifcantly inferior to the parents in adoption, use and literacy of digital media, but they received signifcantly more digital backfeeding in all three dimensions. This fnding is verifed by further analyses of the in?uential factors of digital back-feeding. Those who are weak in individual characteristics (i.e., older, less-educated, female with low self-effcacy and high psychological concerns) but act a center role in family structure (i.e., interact more frequently, profoundly, and have intimate relations with family members) are more likely to receive digital back-feeding.
