Abstract

With the advent of new media era, journalism is faced with unprecedented uncertainties. Technology is regarded as a key to solve “the crisis of journalism”, which has set off a wave of news innovation. Based on Actor Network Theory, this research conducted in-depth interviews with 10 members from 5 news organizations or media technology companies who had participated in innovation projects with the aim of depicting the “translation” between content producers and technologists. This research finds that there are two patterns inside the innovation teams: content producers as focal actors and no focal actors in the network. Different professional background has brought about conflicts in collaboration, including confusion of the technical requirement, conflict in production logic and inconsistent stance between the news organization and the outsourcing team. To cope with the challenge, the innovation teams gradually work out communication strategies to improve the relationship of heterogeneous actors.
