Abstract

A leader of the “Pao Ge” organization named Liu Hui'an built up the Luodai park in Luodai Town in the east Chengdu in the 17th year of the Republican China. From the theoretical perspective of “landscape of practice,” this article investigates how the park becomes a material landscape, how it functions as an arena of embodied practices for the local people, how it affects their perception of historical changes, and how it was imagined and maintained as a “doxic landscape” to promote the tourism development. By trying to minimize the political structure and historical characteristics in the “Pao Ge period,” the Luodai park emphasizes the value of certain relics in the park and the sociocultural achievements of the park, and highlight the "Hakkanese" identity engraved in the space, the memories about the park in Republican China are constructed in an attempt to form a universal, aesthetic and depoliticized imagination of the past.
