Examining the Effect of the Participation in a Mobile-based Support Group on Perceived Social Support and Depression among Group Members

Abstract

By using online survey method, this study mainly examined how participation in a new form of online social group, the QQ group of epilepsy disorders, could contribute to the social support the group members perceived. After controlling the demographic variables, health-related variables and self-effcacy variable, the study found that the perceived group participation was the signifcant predictor of perceived social support. The study also showed that perceived group Participation has a signifcant and direct effect on the depression level of group members, but the moderating role of social support was not found. The study discussed the important theoretical and practical implications.
