Internet historiography: Issues, Theories, and Methods Abstract
The article explores key issues, theories and methods of internet historiography through an academic interview with Prof. Yang Guobin. Yang argues that web pages are an organic part of the society, recording, re?ecting and changing society. Internet history research may start with Web pages and websites. Researchers should emphasize both historical narration and the historicity of technological development and balance the relationship between the individual and the society. In view of the limitations of macro-history narratives and micro-history research, researchers might opt for the writing of mid-picture history. Mid-picture history allows researchers to tap into big issues through case studies or concrete phenomena. More emphasis on narrative description may be a healthy antidose to the overemphasis on explanation in social science research. Narrative description gives voice to individuals and their lived experiences on the Internet, while still shedding on broad social changes. Methodologically, internet historiography may combine the building of internet archives with the collection and analysis of oral histories and individual autobiographies of internet use.
