“Culture Shock” and Cultural Identity in Cyberspace: based on the Life Stories of Chinese International Students' Social Media Use
With the current emergence of a large number of Chinese students studying aboard, issues related to the use of Internet, and how the Internet helps the new generation of Chinese students overseas adapt to an confrontational environment are worth deeper discussion in the field of humanities and social sciences research. Through the life story interview method, this study collects social media experiences of 35 Chinese students studying aboard. Data is encoded and analyzed by Nvivo 11. The study fnds that overseas Chinese students generally encounter cultural identity con?icts when networking online. Through several psychological processes such as cultural introspection of mother Culture and exotic culture, cultural adjustment, most overseas Chinese students develop a long distance and discrete cultural identity based on social media. Finally, this study concludes that the operation of the digital media society has not dissolved the national boundaries and facilitated the emergence of global village, which was predicted by Marshall McLuhan. Chinese diasporic students’ previous social media experience in mainland China and overseas Internet culture collectively form a new ‘digital cultural conflict’, which aggravates ‘cultural shock’ and brings new challenges to the social integration of the diaspora group.
