Constructing Community and Making Pleasure: Communicative Practices in Online Fan Community

Abstract

Communicative practice is a critical sign of fan culture, and it is an important premise of the formation of online community as well. With the development of Internet technology and fan culture, the communicative practices in online fan community have been updated. By conducting netnography in an online community (Baidu PostBar), this study finds that there are four key kinds of communicative practices in online fan community today, including informative practices, affective practices, productive practice and ritual practice. Those four communicative practices play different roles in the process of constructing an online fan community, and they also contribute to fans’ viewing experiencing, performing and identifcation in the online community
