Research on Self-Presentation Motivations on Social Media of Chinese Sojourners in America
Based on intercultural context, this paper studies Chinese sojourners’ main self-presentation motivations on social media and the order of motivation strength, as well as compares the difference between motivations on Chinese and American social media. Our study shows that “maintaining domestic relations” and “conformity” are the primary motivations for sojourners to present themselves on Chinese and American social media; “maintaining domestic relations” is more significant than “developing relationship with Americans” on the level of relational motivation; on the level of individual psychological need motivation, “conformity”, “selfverification” and “pressure reduction” act more significantly on Chinese social media than on American social media. Generally speaking, sojourners present themselves more actively on Chinese social media than on American social media, which indicates to some extent that Chinese sojourners still face challenges in their process of intercultural communication on American social media.
