Abstract

Because the Belt and Road Initiative not only concerns the sharing of economic interests with other countries, but also involves how to obtain international and cross-cultural recognition. In order to achieve effective communications among partner countries, we need to bring the questions of “cultural identity” and “everyday life” together with the Belt and Road Initiative. These two keywords were not only the cornerstone of the Belt and Road Initiative, but also symbolized the connectivity and commonality of people’s mind and soul. Based on the existing cultural identity research, this paper regards the cross-cultural communication of the Belt and Road Initiative as the process of acquisition and construction of cultural identity. Specifically speaking, this paper is based on the four dimensions of cultural identity proposed by Jonathan Friedman: lifestyle identity, modern ethnic identity, traditional ethnic identity, ethnic cultural identity, combining with the cross-cultural context of the Belt and Road Initiative. Then, this article proposes that we need to care about the material needs and symbolic desire of people’s daily life, use inter-subjectivity dialogue, localize cultural communication, explore the historical and cultural memory resources of the related countries and build a community of the Belt and Road Initiative, encourage the people along the road to regard the Belt and Road Initiative as a daily and cultural existence, so as to realize the real recognition.
