News Reports on Chinese Government Press Conference Interpreting within the Framework of Co-Text (1998-2016)
This paper aims to discuss news reports on the Chinese government press conference interpreting by the mainstream Chinese media within the semiotic framework of co-text proposed by Zhao Yiheng. In particular, it focuses on three kinds of meanings of news reports, namely the renewed meaning of commenting-text, the added meaning of para-text, and the grafted meaning of link-text. The study presents the following findings: 1) News reports on interpreting events are not only closely related to political activities, but also constitute an important part of reports about NPC and CPPCC as a whole; 2) Such reports reflect varied interest of the common people by telling a diversity of stories; 3) News reports on interpreting activities during NPC and CPPCC sessions have influenced news communication of interpreting activities on other political occasions and even translation activities, and this could be explained by the transformation of news reports from commenting-text to pre-text. The findings may bring new perspectives to studies on interpreting in political settings and news communication of government press conferences.
