Abstract

Media are experiencing a significant, technology-driven transformation. New forms of media, which have come rapidly to occupy human living space, are changing the connotation of traditional concepts of media and extending them. Questions arise regarding how we define new forms produced by virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI), ubiquitous surveillance cameras, human being with implanted chips, and so on. Although these new forms of media are created by technology, they should not be simply defined as “media technology”. This is because they each have a specific existence, as a physical or virtual life form. They exhibit common novel features, in terms of communication elements, and embody quantitative and qualitative changes. This study attempts to establish a classification framework for interpreting these new forms of media, and attempts to analyze the changes in the connotation and extension of the concept of media as a result. Furthermore, this study presents a unified definition for these new media forms, which primarily share the characteristics of immersive technique as in “immersive media”, in the context of immersive communication in the third media age. Lastly, this study reinforces this definition as applied to varying media forms through the interaction of technology, society, and humanization.
