Abstract

Based on the content analysis of 3264 national news samples in five Chinese newspapers, this paper aims to explore the general characteristics of the journalism models in Chinese press. We find that despite of similarities, there are salient differences within Chinese media system.Different types of media and different types of reporting topics tend to have different model preferences. Loyal-facilitator model and interventionist model are more prominent in the official papers and in political and economic news reporting, while watchdog model and detached model are more prominent in commercial papers and in social news reporting. In addition, contrary to our research hypotheses, infotainment model is more prominent in the official papers than in the commercial papers, and in political and economic news reporting than in social news reporting, not the other way round. Implications of these findings are also discussed.
