Abstract

This exchange extracts the gist of re?ections on the prehistory and history of journalism and communication programs in Hong Kong from 1927 to 2006 by Leonard L. Chu, an emeritus professor and educator of journalism and communication at National Chengchi University in Taiwan. His publications on Chinese media and journalism education have in?uenced many a communication scholar in the Pan-Chinese region. In December 2012, for his contributions in this area Chu was honored by the fourth “Master Hsing Yun Journalism and Communication Awards”. Chu attributes the success of Hong Kong journalism and communication programs to the faculty’s relentless efforts and doyen Wilbur Schramm’s inspiration in the 1970s that laid down a solid foundation for future development. To him, an ideal model for journalism and communication education should encompass a dosage of knowledge and skills as well as critical ability and hands-on practice. He frmly believes in the value of academic integrity and intellectual freedom.
