The relationship between mass media and social movements is an important part of social movement theory. This article discusses news media as a political resource for social movements in China. Specifically, based on a case study of the urban heritage preservation movement in Nanjing, the article shows the interactive process of mass media and one social movement, talks about different media strategies developed by two types of actors, and put forward the analytical concept of “resistance by media”.
