Abstract

Internet technologies are embedded deeply into everyday life and they reshape the meanings and practices of communication. The dynamic relations between technology and human being grow increasingly pronounced. Within the new media context, the uses and gratifications paradigm that sees technologies as instruments external to human existence faces unprecedented challenge. To restore the lively relationship between human and technologies, this study critiques assumptions underlying the uses and gratifcations theory so as to reveal its limits. Thereby, we propose novel research directions and propositions to offer new perspective and approaches for media research.
