King of Communication: An Archeological Study of the Chinese “Sheng” and “Shengren”
In Chinese culture, there is a worship of the “Sheng” and “Shengren” always enjoys high status. “Sheng”, in ancient history, has homology to the witch and is the earliest professional communicator. The prototype of “Shengren” is "the king of communication" who is capable of extraordinary communication skills. “Shengren” can communicate with everything in the world, including the God. This is the foundation of all the legitimacy of “Shengren” in Chinese culture. In spite of changes of Shengren’s images and connotation, certain characteristics are from the same strain, such as, acknowledgeable, ?exible, and enlightening. Compared with the Western sages, the Chinese “Shengren” roots in the native culture of the Shamanism tradition and thus has unique characteristics. This paper aims at doing an archaeological research about the origin of “Shengren” by probing into the ancient Chinese character “Sheng”.
