Cross-cultural Communication Strategies and Translation Skills of Illustrations of Men and Things in Kwangtung Based on The Chinese Repository
The Chinese Repository, an encyclopaedic English periodical founded by American missionary E. C. Bridgman in Canton in May 1832, aimed to introduce China to the west countries. There were some columns on illustrations and translations of Men and Things in Kwangtung in The Chinese Repository, such as Description of the City of Canton, Topography of the Province of Canton, Walks About Canton. The writers or editors consciously chose some interesting but strange topics about Kwangtung culture, adopted the translation method of Romanization spelling + free translation to the special nouns of personal names, places names and cultural-loaded words in Kwangtung, put some additional explanations in the translated articles and reports in these columns, employed the story-telling narrative and compared the Chinese typical men and things with the ones in west culture. An analysis of these cross-cultural communication strategies and translation skills will be benefcial for us to understand the history of illustrations and translations of Men and Things in Kwangtung to foreign countries in the frst half of 19 century and provide some suggestions for Chinese culture publicity abroad.
