Abstract

It has been more than two decades since the frst “new media event” in China. This article is based on the second “new media event research” workshop held at the School of Journalism and Communication, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It discusses the social settings and epistemological logics behind academic research on new media events in China. By re?ecting on recent trends in new media events research, including the deployment of new methods, the expansion of research scope, and the utilization of new and old theoretical tools, Jack Linchuan Qiu proposes that scholars need to transcend self-confning modes of conventional thinking; that researchers need to conduct in-depth studies of Internet platform companies as well as network labor; and that comparative approaches beyond time and space shall enable us to discover structures and historical patterns behind the phenomena observed. Then Chinese-language academia may seize the opportunity to play a leading role worldwide in the feld of new media events research.
