Abstract

Collective memory study toward a communication orientation has seen conspicuous signs of strength recent years, particularly given that construction mechanism of memory is shaped by the Internet. This paper reviews the theoretical background and intersection of communication and collective memory, explicates the core problematic whether collective memory tends to be historical continued or ruptured, and analyzes the literature in three areas of collective memory toward a communication orientation: politics & media power, new media & globalization, and interdisciplinarity. Synthesizing the literature in these areas, this paper argues that more attention should be paid on defects of individual basis, the “present-future” axis, and quantitative methods based on big data.
