Abstract

This article provides a brief glimpse into media and communication history in the Chinese-speaking world by recalling my lifetime encounter with Professor Hsu Chia-Shih. Professor Hsu as a pioneer wrote the first text on communication theory in Chinese that has inspired succeeding generations of students. Thanks to his guidance I came to know at close range two masters in media research and one distinguished journalist who contributed to the shaping of my career interest and path. Professor Hsu was a strong but gentle guardian of professional autonomy of journalism in Taiwan.
