Abstract

Based on the data from the self-built net-speak corpus and the data from the third parties, the present article scientifically researches into the underlying reasons that some net-speaks remain popular for a long period of time while others are only transitory. The research results show that “strong memes” play a significant role in the popularity and communication of net-speak. The statistical analysis of the data from the net-speak corpus indicates that the four categories of net-speak:social pragmatic memes, emoticon memes, homophonic memes and abbreviation memes enjoy the highest proportion, reaching 72% of the total corpus, forming the main force in the production, evolution and communication of net-speak. The present study is not only significant in its scientific interpretation on underlying reasons of strong memes of net-speak, but also in its enlightenment for the research on the production, popularity and communication path of internet public opinion.
