Abstract

At the invitation of Peking University Global Fellowship Program and Institute of National Strategic Communication, Professor Daniel Toby Schiller from University of Illinois at Urbana - Champagne visited Peking University from Oct. 22th to Nov. 2nd, 2016 and delivered four lectures. In his lecture series, Prof. Schiller began with the rise of digital capitalism since the 1960s and 1970s, and analyzed its historical origin, power structure and current geopolitical map. Tracing back to the telecom history, Prof. Schiller discussed the factors both home and abroad that contributed to the US’ hegemony, especially the key role of the ?exible and coercive government intervention. Finally, Prof. Schiller used the literature to analyze the international competition in the history of global communication. According to Schiller, while digital capitalism has modernized the contradictions of capitalism, it cannot go beyond the inherent crisis of capitalism.
