Abstract

The author of "Discussion on 'Time' Aspect of Musical Symbol in Communication"(Chinese Journal of Journalism & Communication, 2013, Vol.35, No.9)believes that music is a temporal symbol but not a spatial one, and therefore there is no symmetry in music. Examining music in films and TV dramas, this paper argues that music is not only a temporal symbol but also a spatial one. The structural elements in music should be given adequate consideration in dealing with the relationship between music and pictures. In addition, this essay raises issues regarding music symmetry, tuning and temperament, time-structure and time-experience for further discussion.
