Abstract

In terms of climate negotiation standpoint, the UK, Canada and China represent the interests
of the European Union, Umbrella Group and the developing countries respectively. Quantitatively,
this article uses Critical Metaphor Analysis to analyze these countries’ statements in the 2011 Durban
Climate Change Conference. Qualitatively, 3 conceptual metaphors are analyzed to shed light upon
the hidden political motivations. Besides, how the 3 countries use metaphors to construct their “Self-
Other” identities is also discussed. Research result shows that political standpoints influence the use of
metaphors, and the UK, Canada and China construct “Self-Other” identities discriminately during the
conference to serve for their own group’s interest.
