Re-constructuring Multimodal Argumentative Discourse: A Study on an ABC News
In the process of reading and re-constructing public multimodal argumentative discourse, a key question is “how could we transfer the reconstruction responsibility from the analyst to rhetor, namely, the rhetor either acknowledges the argument reconstruction as valid or refutes its validity in a meta- discussion”. Based on that, this paper takes a case study on an ABC news named “Hu Jintao Visit: Economics and Panda Bears”. It analyzes and re-constructs the multimodal argumentative discourse of the news, and further discusses the feasibility of exploring new research methods in journalism and communication research. This paper also finds that there are interactive relations among different modes in the same discourse, and for that reason, the multimodal discourse should be analyzed in a coherent and relevant manner.
