To make a clear distinction among the news genres is the first step to study journalism. This paper
takes the Pulitzer Prize as an example and tries to outline the history of the classification of American
news genres. It finds that the Pulitzer Prize has a close yet independent relationship with the practice of
American newspaper industry.
