Abstract

The paper analyzes 242 editorials of Ming Pao concerning the future of Hong Kong from 1971 to 1982. It ?nds that the main  tone  of  the editorials was to     maintain the status quo that maintaining the colonial status and capitalism system. From those  editorials, maintaining the status quo was not only    bene?cial  to Hong Kong but also to mainland China. The editorials were written from the perspectives of Sino-Soviet relations, the modernization of mainland China and the interests of Hong Kong, and the purpose was to construct Hong Kong identity by means of internalizing the external reality.   Maintaining the status  quo re?ects the colonial experience of Hong  Kong in the context of    Cold   War,  which still has great in?uence on the identity of Hong Kong today.
