Abstract

This study examined the impact of mobile communication competence on mobile communication usage based on an analysis of a sample comprised of college students in China (N = 1218). Based on factor analysis and multiple regressions, we identified three factors that affected mobile communication competence (technique-efficacy, preference-affection, and communication-appropriateness) and two factors that affected mobile communication usage (leisure-entertainment and communication-interaction). The results revealed that three factors that affected mobile communication competence were significant predictors of two factors that affected mobile communication usage. This study simplified survey items and verified the Bakke’s model indirectly because the three independent variables were composed of the elements of motivation and the elements of application proposed by Bakke’s model. In addition, this study tested not only Bakke’s version of mobile communication usage, but also mobile entertainment, which deepens our understanding of the primary factors that affect mobile communication competence and mobile communication usage within a Chinese cultural context.
