The Red Expansion Movement was a social movement of the local governments in the Central Soviet Union to mobilize the people to join the army. Red China utilized images to provide effective visual communication about the Red Expansion Movement. The discursive production of images in the Red Expansion Movement was mainly reflected in three aspects: contextual engagement, symbolic representation, and intertextuality. Through images, Red China activated the urgent social context of China at that time, and connected with the Red Expansion Movement and jointly constructed the rationality of the Red Expansion discourse. In addition, the images in the Red Expansion Movement expropriated and recreated the imagery of women, teenagers and flags, together with the symbols of scenes, actions and props, providing the emotional framework for the Red Expansion. Furthermore, images and language jointly completed the production and flow of discourse through metaphor and other interpretative principles as well as cross-media intertextuality.
