Game-like Convergence: Examining the practice of governmental WeChat media through the perspective of feld theory
Departing from Bourdieu’s field theory and based on in-depth interviews with practitioners of governmental WeChat media in City Z, this article argues that the practice of governmental WeChat media is the result of convergence or con?ict between journalistic feld and political feld, in which different actors play the game according to the logic of their respective field. To put it concretely, there are four forms of practices, i.e. political loyalty combined with communication success, political loyalty but communication failure, political dissonance and communication failure, and political dissonance but communication success. The contradictory practice derives from the cultural con?ict between the two distinctive felds. It re?ects the ‘gaming’ attitude between different actors in the government and WeChat media, who are constantly considering kinds of three factors: expenses and gain, level of activity, and generational judgement. Nevertheless, achieving market success while maintaining political safety is the trade-off commonly shared by both sides, and this makes possible the accommodating practice between two fields. The article thus concludes that Chinese governmental new media practice can be understood as a game-like convergence.
